BorninNewZeaLandin1951,EricaRussellEmigratedwithherparentstoSouthAfricain1953andspentherchildhoodthere,findinginspirationinthelocalfolKTraditionsAndespeciallyAfricanmusicanddance.MovingtoLondonintheearly1970s,shejoinedRichardWilliams'animationstudioasapaint-and-tracer,andgainedvaluableexperienceassistingtheveteranDisneyanimatorArtBabbitt.Throughoutthe1970sand80ssheworkedforanumberofanimatorsandanimationcompanies(includingGeraldScarfe,PaulVesterandRockyMorton)beforeestablishingherownstudio,Eyeworks,andmaKINGhersolodirecting/animationdebutwithFeetofSong(1988).Anear-abstractexplorationofcolourandrhythmdepictedthroughfleetingimpressionsofdancers'bodies,FeetofSongestablishedherreputationasanaturalsuccessortohercompatriotLenLyeinherrapturousconversionofmovement,musicandcolourintoapuresensoryexperience.HersubseQuentsoloprojectshavEcontinuedinasimilarvein,includingtheOscar-nOminatedTriangle(1992)andSOMA(2001).Thefirstofthesedepictedthetravailsofalovetriangle(onemanandtwowomen)throughpuremovement,whilethelatterwasinspiredbygraffitiart,streetdanceandtheworkofJean-MichelBasquiat.Sheregardsthesethreefilms(allfundedbyChannel4)asforminga'dancetrilogy'.Likemostanimators,Russellspendsmuchofhertimedoingbread-and-buttercommissionsfromcommercialscompanies(suchastheaward-winning'Sensual',madeforLevi'sJeansforWomenseries),musicvideoproducers(MilesDavis,EltonJohn,Madonna,TomJones)andtitledesignsfortelevisionseries.Since1992,shehasrunherownLondon-basedproductioncompany,Gingco,withherpartnerandproducerAdamParker-Rhodes.
